Adverbial clause
Adverbial clause didefinisikan sebagai anak kalimat yang berfungsi sebagai kata keterangan yaitu menerangkan selain NOUN (kata benda) atau PRONOUN (kata ganti). Umumnya adverbial clause dibentuk dengan menggunakan kat a penghubung bertingkat (subordinate conjunction) dan bukan setara.

1. Adverbial clause of time
Subordinate conjunction yg digunakan : when,whenever,while,after,before,until,as soon as,sinc,as.
Example :
• I will call you whenever I need sleep.
• As I left the house,I remembered the key.
• Before she went to school,she had had her breakfast.

2. Adverbial clause of place
Subordinate conjunction yg digunakan : where, wherever.
Example:
• We saw the ring where they found the necklace.
• Wherever you go,you can find the children.

3. Adverbial clause of manner
Subordinate conjunction yg digunakan : as, as though,as if.
Example :
• You should have done it as I showed you.
• He talked to me as if he had talked to a servant.

4. Adverbial clause of cause/reason
Subordinate conjunction yg digunakan : because,since,as,for.
Example :
• He took the food eagerly for he was hungry.
• He didn’t go to school because he was ill.

Cat: selain menggnakan adverbial clause untuk menyatakan cause/reason dapat pula digunakan frasa dengan pola [ because of atau due to + participal phrase/noun/gerund].
5. Adverbial clause of purpose
Subordinate conjunction yg digunakan : so that,in order that,in case.
Example :
• They are saving their money so that they can buy a house.
6. Adverbial clause of result
Subordinate conjunction yang digunakan : …so..that..,..such..that…
Example :
• The fog is so thick that we cant see the view clearly.

7. Adverbial clause of concession
Subordinate conjunction yang digunakan : although, though, even though,even if.
Example :
• He passed the test though he didn’t study well.
Cat : selain mneggunakan adverbial clause untuk menyatakan contrast dapat pula digunakan frasa dengan pola [ despite atau in spite of + noun/gerund].

8. Adverbial clause of condition.
Subordinate conjunction : if ,provide that, on condition that,unless.
Example :
• If I were rich I would give you much money.
• Unless I knew her, I wouldn’t greet her.

9. Adverbial clause of degree.
Subordinate conjunction: …as…as
Example :
• Nata is diligent as Nara.

10. Adverbial clause of contrast.
Subordinate conjunction : whereas,where ,at the same time, while.
Example :
• I wanted to stay home ,whreas my sister wanted to go.
